Yesterday I picked up Mel at the law school and drove north on Mountain Rd. It’s a semi-major street. It’s two lanes with bike lanes. Anyway, I wasn’t quite paying attention but I saw two gray birds converge over the road and then I saw a spray of feathers. The pair disappeared over a fence. It took me a second to figure out what had happened. I suspect it was a Cooper’s Hawk; apparently they are pretty common around here. They are the same color as the Mourning Dove’s and not much bigger. So I’m pretty sure what Mel and I saw was a kill.
Speaking of birds of prey, I was reminded of what happened when I saw this video: Eagle drags mountain goat off cliff http://kensingtonvictoria.com/?p=1099
