Changes

Although humans are changing the climate, they are also having other impacts upon the global ecosystems. The point of these stories is not climate change. At least not the point I’m trying to make. My focus is on the human tragedy that is happening now in both Egypt and Sudan and the immediate causes of each. We can draw a straight line from the drought in Russia to the soaring prices of wheat  in Egypt. We can draw a straight line from the drought in Sudan and the conflict between the farmers and the nomads. I believe there is a connection between what anthropogenic climate change and what is happening there. I don’t have the time, space, or expertise to debate that here. I do know that humans are stressing the world’s water cycle greatly. We are pushing the planetary boundaries. Climate change is only one of them.

PS – I’d composed this before Mubarak stepped down. I hope that the people of Egypt will finally be able to elect a Democratic and free government.

Changes are afoot

I’m working on a new version of my website. It will not be WordPress, but I’ll probably keep this one as an archive. I have another site that I’ll do the same thing for as well. Just create an archive of them. More later.

Arizona is Doomed

I simply do not have the energy to go on about the the utter failure that is our Republican governor and Republican controlled state legislature. They should be raising taxes modestly on the upper income brackets to fix the huge hole in our state budget, $9 billion I believe. They should be doing everything they can to help the state’s economy and they are off in crazy land. That wouldn’t be so bad if they weren’t in charge.

Read these and weep.

2011 is not off to a great start. I cannot hope that 2011 would be better than 2010. My only hope is that it would not be worse. And 2010 was a bad year for a lot of people.

When we moved to Tucson we lived in Giffords’ district. Only a few miles from the shopping center where she was shot. In fact we’d been by that Safeway many times. I can’t recall if I’d ever been in that store but I have been in that parking lot. Had we still lived in the district, I might have considered going to that event. We now live in Grijalva’s district who I thought would be a more likely target than Giffords. My thoughts are with the those affected by this terrible tragedy.

I do have a new hero. Sheriff Dupnik. He pointed out that the toxic political environment contributed to this event. I’d also like to add being able to buy 30 round magazines made the shooting a lot deadlier. If the assault weapons ban had been renewed, it would not have prevented the tragedy, the shooter may have chosen a larger caliber handgun. Who knows, but I think it would have been less deadly.

I’m not asking or telling conservatives/libertarians to shut up. Neither is Dupnik. We just want them to stop their eliminationist rhetoric treating their fellow Americans as enemies. We can still have heated debates, call each other names, nor do we have to be civil. As he said free speech is not without consequence. And he’s received a lot of heat for his free speech.

Jon Stewart in his opening monologue last night said, "You know, it would be really nice if the ramblings of crazy people didn’t in any way resemble how we actually talk to each other on TV. Let’s at least make troubled individuals easier to spot."

We cannot make the world 100% safe, but we can make our world more resilient, more able to handle the slings and arrows of outrageous that come our way.
It’s become clear that Loughner was the classic lone wolf type. To what extent the current climate affected him, I don’t know. I saw his YouTube channel and read his rantings. His reading list covers all the bases to confirm anyone’s bias about his political leanings. Though it was very clear he was very anti-government. Almost Unabomber-ish. I might even classify him of the sovereign citizen bent. The one video that disturbed me the most was of him obscured setting an American flag on fire. The soundtrack was a heavy metal song. The lyrics still haunt me. Repeated over and over and over.  "Let the bodies hit the floor. Let the bodies hit the floor. Let the bodies hit the floor."

Boxing Day

Decided to drive home for the holidays. Spent last week in the DFW area with in-laws. Got to see some of my cousins, aunts and uncles there too. Drove to Tulsa today and spending the week with my family. Going to see some old friends. Then after New Years, it’s the long drive back to Tucson. We’ll probably take the southern route to avoid any bad weather. Holidays were good to us. Made out like a bandit for Christmas. I appreciate and use the stuff receive, but I have enough stuff and don’t really need much. Except for some new clothes. Being the sloth that I am and heavy eater I’ve put on the pounds again. I need to stick to an exercise regimen. Though what I really hope to find is a place to train in JKD in Tucson. No luck finding anyone that teaches the flavor of JKD I learned.

Even though there aren’t many who learn the art, there are four factions and politics. So though they are very similar and could most likely train with other students of other schools, I’d have to navigate the politics of that particular groups adherents. Anyway, I somewhat interested in learning ground fighting techniques. Not that I ever want to get knocked down in a fight, I need to be able to handle myself should that occur. The JKD I learned doesn’t deal with it. Though if I were good enough at it I wouldn’t have to worry about it.

The reason why I strayed into JKD in this post was I learned a lot of boxing maneuvers in my training and they are very useful fighting techniques. Bruce Lee borrowed a lot from western martial arts such as boxing and fencing.  And of course one of the names for the day after Christmas was Boxing Day. Which if I understand it correctly is a way to re-gift stuff you received that you didn’t like but you think someone else might.

The other thing that happened on Boxing Day was in 2004 when a quarter million people were wiped out by tsunami in the Indian Ocean.
